Summer Off-grid Power Workshops

Off grid with Avens Alaska -
where reliable systems support comfort and self sufficiency in remote Alaska

Living off‑grid in Alaska is not an experiment. It is a daily reality shaped by cold, darkness, distance, and logistics. Systems that work elsewhere often fail here — sometimes quietly, sometimes catastrophically.

This summer, Avens Alaska is hosting a limited series of in‑person, small‑group workshops designed specifically for Alaskans who want off‑grid systems that are reliable, repairable, and suitable for long‑term use.

What Makes These Workshops Different

These workshops are built around one core principle:

Reliability matters more than optimization.

You will not be sold products or shown idealized systems. Instead, you will learn how real systems behave over time — where they fail, why they fail, and how to design for recovery when they do.

Topics include:

  • Alaska‑specific off‑grid realities and tradeoffs

  • How power, heat, and water systems interact

  • Common failure points and design mistakes

  • Redundancy and maintenance planning

  • Cost vs. reliability decision frameworks

  • Guided tours of operating off‑grid cabins and infrastructure

Instructor: Lived Experience, Not Theory

Michael has lived in remote Alaska his entire life, with over 20 years of experience operating power plants and off‑grid systems across the state.

His background includes millwright work and extensive mechanical, electrical, and civil systems experience, grounded in real infrastructure that must operate year‑round under extreme conditions — not demonstration projects.

The focus throughout the workshops is practical decision‑making: what breaks, what lasts, and what you can realistically maintain yourself.

Workshop Structure

  • Friday evening: Orientation and Alaska reality check

  • Saturday: System walk-throughs and decision frameworks

  • Sunday: Personal planning session and next steps

Group size is intentionally limited to 6–12 participants to allow for meaningful discussion and hands‑on learning.

Pricing & Logistics

  • Workshop tuition: $525 per person

  • Optional lodging $341 per night per cabin (standard guest rate)

  • Optional meal package $129 per person per day

  • Optional lodging available at a workshop rate
