The Alaska Lodge You’ve Never Heard Of (But Should Book Immediately)

How Avens Alaska Delivers just what Travelers Are Craving now: Wilderness, Comfort, and a True Escape from the Noise

If you've been scrolling through travel sites lately, searching for something quieter, wilder, and more meaningful than your last vacation — you might have noticed a theme: the things travelers want most in 2026 are things that are genuinely hard to find. Uncrowded nature. Real freedom from distraction. Authentic comfort in a remote setting. A reason to actually put the phone down.

Avens Alaska Lodge delivers all of it — and then some.

Tucked into the northern heart of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve at Mile 28 of the Nabesna Road, Avens Alaska is one of the only lodges inside the park open year-round. It's remote, yes — but that's exactly what makes it extraordinary.

The Quiet You've Been Looking For: Alaska's Most Under-visited National Park

Feel like the first people who explored this land:

Nabesna Road offers endless opportunities to discover untouched wilderness with ease.

Most visitors to Alaska head straight for Denali. It's spectacular — and perpetually packed. Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, meanwhile, is six times the size of Yellowstone and one of the most undervisited wilderness areas in the country. Here, you won't jostle for a parking spot or wait in line for a trail permit.

You'll have sweeping alpine valleys, volcanic peaks, ancient glaciers, and pristine wilderness lakes to yourself. This is the real Alaska — unhurried and yours.

Wilderness Meets Comfort: No Trade-Offs Required

That's the exact balance Avens Alaska was built around. Every cabin and yurt is thoughtfully appointed with wood-fired heaters, spring water, and the kind of stillness that city life simply can't replicate. Shared amenities include a wood-fired sauna, a historic lodge tavern, and a dining experience featuring fresh Alaska cuisine — some of it wild-harvested right from the surrounding land.

Fresh flavorful seed-to-table fare awaits you at Avens Alaska

Power at Avens comes from wind, solar, and biomass heat — meaning your comfort doesn't come at the land's expense.

Comfort & Sustainability:

The Perfect Digital Detox — Reconnect With What Actually Matters

Cell service on Nabesna Road fades out around mile 15–18. Satellite internet is available for guests who need it — but most guests find that within a few hours of arriving, they've forgotten to check it.

Avens is the rare place where that kind of stillness is genuinely available. The cabins have flat-screen TVs and DVD players, and the lodge has a large Alaskan book collection, but guests consistently report that the mountain views win.

Adventure That Pushes Limits — Extreme Nature Experiences

Jacksina Glacier

Wrangell-St. Elias delivers. This is one of the most geologically dramatic landscapes on Earth — volcanoes, glaciers, and peaks that dwarf anything in the Lower 48. And from Avens, you access it all on your terms:

•        Backcountry hiking through alpine meadows and old-growth spruce forest or ancient volcanic lava rocks

•        Wildlife encounters — grizzly bears, moose, wolves, Dall sheep, and hundreds of bird species

•        Paddling and fishing on wilderness lakes unmarked on most maps

•        Photography of wildflowers, mountain reflections, and storm-lit peaks

•        Brilliant fall foliage — among Alaska's most underrated autumn color destinations

Northern Lights & Dark Sky Experiences: Alaska's Aurora Season

The skies above Nabesna Road are exceptional for aurora borealis viewing. With zero light pollution and long winter nights, Avens Alaska is one of the finest northern lights destinations in the state — and one of the only lodges in Wrangell-St. Elias open year-round to receive winter guests.

Imagine stepping out of your warm, wood-fired cabin into a silent, snow-covered wilderness under a sky alive with green and violet light dancing across the starry Milky Way. That's a real night at Avens in winter.

The Perfect Couples Retreat — Test What You're Made Of, Together

A week at Avens is about as revealing as a vacation gets. You'll navigate a wilderness road together (text us when you leave the highway and we’ll keep an eye out for your arrival, if you like), make decisions without Google, wake up to mountains, and find out what 'unplug and reconnect' actually means when there's no distraction to hide behind.

Most couples who come to Avens leave closer than when they arrived. The Raven Cabin and Orion’s Yurt are especially popular for couples seeking privacy and intimacy in a spectacular natural setting.

Family Vacations 2.0 — Multi-Generational Adventure

Avens is genuinely family-friendly (we’re raising our kids here). Children are welcome, well-behaved dogs travel with you (with a pet fee), and the lodge has Pack 'N Play cribs, children's books, tree swings, and DVDs on hand. Wide open spaces and untouched nature are perfect for kids to roam, laugh, and explore. Larger groups can spread across multiple cabins while sharing the sauna, tavern, and dining experience.

At Avens, the family dog is part of the adventure. Miles of wilderness trails (one of the few national parks that allow dogs!), lake access, and wide-open space make it a genuine retreat for the whole pack.

You've Earned This — No Occasion Required

If that resonates — if you've been telling yourself you'll plan that Alaska trip 'someday' — this is the year travelers are actually doing it. The Avens Alaska team makes it easy: browse cabins, check dates, and book directly online in a few minutes.

Whether you're celebrating a promotion, marking a breakup, recovering from burnout, or simply deciding you're ready for something real — Avens is waiting and won’t disappoint.

Sustainable Travel That Actually Means Something

Avens Alaska has been walking this walk since its founding — not as a marketing angle, but as a genuine operating philosophy. The lodge runs on renewable energy from wind, solar, and biomass heat. Staff earn a living wage. Menu items are freshly made, locally sourced, and wild-harvested. The environmental footprint of your stay is thoughtfully minimized at every turn.

This is what sustainable travel actually looks like — not a green-washed hotel amenity card, but a lodge built from the ground up around respect for the land it sits on.

Personalized, Self-Directed Adventures — On Your Schedule

Our friendly self-contained bear dog Jake enjoys going for hikes

There's no prescribed program at Avens. You arrive, settle in, and decide what the day looks like. Want to hike at sunrise and spend the afternoon on the lake? Do it. Want to sit on your cabin deck with a coffee and read for four hours? Nobody's stopping you.

The team at Avens — hosts Michael and Victoria — are available with local knowledge, trail recommendations, great books, and genuine Alaskan hospitality whenever you want it, and respectfully out of your way when you don't. That's rare.

"One of the best stays away from home that I've ever had. Mike and Victoria were the most friendly and accommodating hosts ever. I can't recommend the Avens Alaska Lodge enough!"
